How Are Paper Bags Made?

2023-09-20

Imagine a groundbreaking technology that could revolutionize packaging and goods delivery, providing both protection and branding capabilities. Well, back in the mid-late 1800s in the US, paper bags did just that.

The inventor of the paper bag remains shrouded in obscurity, but the square-bottomed design is widely attributed to Luther Childs Crowell of Wellfleet, Massachusetts. Crowell's flat-bottomed bag emerged in the 1870s, while Francis Wolle, a US schoolteacher, pioneered the first machine for mass-producing these bags as early as the 1850s. Wolle and his brother patented the machine and established the Union Paper Bag Company, setting the stage for the widespread production of paper bags.

So, how are paper bags manufactured? They start as paper pulp, which is then pressed into flat sheets or rolls. These rolls are cut to double the height of the final bag. The cut sheets are folded over, and the two parallel open sides are securely glued together, either by pressing or through a process involving heat and pressure.
